Under the Sky | Lingering Landscapes

 2026. 9. 5 — 10. 4

Marina Gallery

Bae Byoungkyu has long painted "landscapes in passing" — glimpses caught in daily life and on the road. This exhibition presents his recent work, spanning Cheorwon's sky alongside landscapes met in everyday life and travel.

This new work is an extension of his long-standing practice of "landscapes in passing." His gaze now lingers longer in the sky than before.

"Even the same sky looks bluer in Cheorwon."

More than a decade after leaving and returning to Cheorwon, the sky has become the landscape where his gaze lingers longest.

His recent paintings, seen in the studio, hold a wider stillness and a clearer light than before. While his long-held gaze toward "landscapes in passing" remains unchanged, the canvas now breathes with greater restraint.

[Studio Visit _ Bae Byoungkyu] Cheorwon, Revisited, A Gaze That Lingers

I returned to Cheorwon after more than two years.

The first time I visited was in May, when the air was thick with the scent of acacia blossoms. Back then, the artist was painting "landscapes in passing" — glimpses caught in daily life and on the road — and those works became an exhibition at Marina Gallery.

Since then, two years have passed.

The artist was still working in Cheorwon, but his gaze had grown deeper, steadier. On the walls hung the familiar "landscapes in passing," and between them, Cheorwon's wide sky filled the space.

"Actually, it's the same work," he said.

He described this new body of work not as a fresh beginning, but as an extension of what he had long been doing. His way of looking at passing landscapes hadn't changed — only, within them, the place where his gaze now lingered longest had become the sky.

Cheorwon is where the artist spent much of his youth. Having passed through many chapters of life before returning here, he now lives with childhood memory and the present at once. Landscapes once passed over without a thought have become the very subject of his work, and the sky — different with every season — offers him a new view each day.

Sitting in his studio, he spoke a great deal about Cheorwon's sky: how it grows clearer after rain, the hour when the sunset is most beautiful, how the color of the air shifts with the seasons. He didn't sound like someone explaining a landscape — he sounded like someone speaking of a hometown he had lived in for a long time.

In one corner of the studio, works from two years ago stood alongside his most recent paintings — canvases once built up with thick, heavy paint, next to a sky now rendered with far more space and light.

"My paintings used to be heavy, too. At some point, I realized I was living too heavily," he said.

That single sentence explained the shift on the canvas better than anything else could.

The sky is still a passing landscape. But within that passing, the artist watches for what lingers in the mind. Not a sky that erases feeling, but one that waits for feeling to find its place.

Leaving the studio, I looked up at the sky once more.

Two years ago, I must have stood in this same spot and looked up too. But in the time that had passed, both his paintings and the way we look at that sky had quietly changed.

Perhaps what changes is not the landscape, but the heart that looks at it.
