One of Nature

 

 

접었다 폈다 반복되는 일상 속에서

손에 잡았다고 생각했는데 잡혀 있는 게 없는 걸 알았을 때

손에 가득 잡았던 것들을 스스로 내려 놓거나 버려야 하는 순간이 왔을 때

부서지지 않기 위해서 필요한 건 쉼표였다.

쉼표는 나를 헤아리는 일이다. 나를 대체할 수 있는 것은 아무것도 없기에…

 

중국 작가 ‘잔홍즈’의 말을 빌리면 ‘독서는 앉아서 하는 여행이고, 여행은 서서 하는 독서’라는데 여러 형태의 쉼표 중 하나인 여행길에 들고 간 책 가운데 도자기 역사서를 읽고 우연찮게 도예를 시작한 계기가 되었지만, 각 나라의 역사관련 책을 보면 거의 첫 부분에 흙으로 빚은 토기(土器)를 소개하고 있고 박물관마다 소장된 나라별 시대의 역사〮문화적 배경이 담긴 도자기를 보면서 내가 살고 있는 이 시대, 순간을 표현하고 싶은 강한 호기심이 지금에 와 있다.

 

너무 흔해서 일까? 흙, 물, 공기, 바람, 식물 등 무심히 여겼던 것들에 대한 깊은 생각과 관심을 갖기 시작하면서 내 주변에 있는 모든 것들이 ‘선’으로 이끄는 자연의 손길임을 알았다.

흙과 물이 서로 만나 물성(物性)이 변하고 나무와 공기〮바람이 서로 만나 불을 생성하고, 손끝에서 변화(變化)된 물성과 불의 이차적 만남이 성사되면서 작품이 탄생하는 과정은 인간의 삶과 무척 닮았다.

 

흙장난을 하며 뛰놀던 유년시절, 물이 있는 곳이면 어디든 나뭇잎 배를 갖고 놀던 기억을 떠올리며 자연으로 회귀하고 싶고, 인위적인 개입을 되도록 피하고 손놀림 그대로 자연의 순리를 따르고 싶어 느리지만, 직접 코일링(coiling)하면서 보고 느끼는 것들을 표현하였다. 숨어 있는 것과 보이는 것들(바람의 눈과 흔적, 바람을 머금거나 품은 꽃잎, 물결 등)을 표현하고자 했고, 근원적인 자연의 산물과 주변에 가까이 있는 것들을 소재로 했다. 언제부턴가 아무리 멀리 있어도 크고 또렷하게 보이는 건 나무였다. 항상 곁에 두고 보고 싶고 만지고 싶은 나무가 그렇게 내 안에 들어와 있다.

 

인간과 밀접한 관계에 있는 모든 사물들을 쉽게 구하고 사용하고 폐기해 버리는 요즘, 작업을 하면서도 잠시 망설여지는 건 사물을 좀 더 아끼고 예술적 표현 감각이나 미학적인 것을 찾아내 작품을 통해 인간적인 이야기를 하고 싶어서다. 너, 나, 모두 자연의 일부이므로!

어차피 우리는 자연(自然)에서 다시 만난다.

One of Nature

 

In the daily routine, realizing nothing grasped, and at the time leaving something it looks worthy, the pausing itself would be the way that I take care of myself because I am the most important in my life.

 

According to Republic of China writer Hongzhi Zhan, the reading is the traveling in seating while the travel would be the reading in walking. I had a travel to take a meaningful pause. It was a coincidence that I found the porcelain art in the history book I brought with me, actually motivated me to lead to a new world. Reading the history books, it mostly mention pottery or porcelain work in the beginning part of book, and national museum in many countries present various pieces of porcelains, showing different histories and cultures, which I am here wishing to express the culture, nature, captured the moment alive at the period of time when I live through my piece of work.

 

Is it too common? After having a concern on soil, water, air, such things, not so much minded so far, I feel all these surroundings are from the touch by nature, leading to true balance and harmonize the world for us. The properties of soil, water, tree, even flame all used in the work changes with human’s touch, and it finally turns into the piece of porcelain, which seems very similar with our life, looking at the whole process of making it.

 

I joyfully recall the childhood, playing a leaf boat wherever the water is, and miss the natural things. That’s why the automatic spinning wheel is not used in my work, but most of touch is done by hand. It is slow process. What I would like to express at work are hidden stuffs in nature, and what we can see just like the trace of wind, the leaves & flowers with wind, ripples, etc on what I feel such in coiling work by hand fingers. I can say all nature surrounding us nearby or any form of nature could be a good element always inspiring me of the work.

 

From sometime, the tree means to me a lot even if it stands distant far. I always wish to be with it close, touch it. The trees are in my mind.

 

These days we easily get the things used for human and then abandoned. Meanwhile I wish to continue to pursue the art world presenting the values, having the sense of artificial expression and aesthetics, and talk about the human stories through the piece of work. You and me, we are all part of nature!

 

We breathe together with the nature.
