Always Beside Us
Time Shared with Plants
We often remember flowers for the vivid moment they bloom. Yet for plants, the time spent growing, enduring, and withering is far longer than the time they spend in bloom.
The artist turns her gaze toward this passage of time. Plants taking root in the darkness beneath the soil, purple kohlrabi with its blemishes still intact, and wrinkled leaves—ordinary things encountered in everyday life—become the subjects of the work. Rather than perfectly formed plants, the artist is drawn to the traces left by each one as it lives in its own place and in its own time.
Layering colored-pencil lines one by one onto paper is akin to tracing the time a plant has lived through. Through these accumulating lines, the plants we might otherwise overlook in everyday life acquire their own expressions and come to stand before us as distinct presences.
These drawings go beyond an observation of plants to become landscapes that evoke someone who has lived through another day. In time, the plants wither and return to the soil, but the warmth left within the drawings remains beside us.
There are things always beside us that we have failed to recognize as precious simply because they have always been there. May this exhibition invite us to look anew at the familiar and to encounter the individual time and traces held within it.
