마리나갤러리는 11월 5일부터 29일까지 백은하 작가의 개인전 〈안녕을 빌며 - 지구별의 벗들에게〉를 개최한다. 동물의 모습을 천과 실로 기록하고 생명들에게 안부를 건네는 이번 전시에서는 20여 점의 작품을 선보인다. 이 가운데 14점은 이번 전시를 위해 제작한 신작이다.

작품이 만들어지는 작업실의 풍경과 작가의 이야기는 11월 1일 작업실 방문기로 만나 볼 수 있다.

Marina Gallery presents PAIK Una’s solo exhibition Wishing You Well - To Our Friends on Earth from November 5 to 29. Recording animals in cloth and thread and extending well-wishes to living beings, the exhibition presents around 20 works, 14 of which are new works created for the occasion.

The studio where the works take shape, and the artist’s story, will be shared in our studio visit on November 1.

■ 전시 서문

안녕을 빌며
지구별의 벗들에게

인간 중심의 세상에서 많은 생명이 제자리를 잃고 사라져 간다. 작가는 먼 극지에서 우리 곁에 이르기까지, 잊혀가는 생명들의 모습을 작품에 담고 그들의 안녕을 빈다.

작업은 절제된 바탕에서 시작된다. 아크릴 물감으로 표현한 눈 덮인 숲과 바닷가, 은은한 산수의 풍경은 생명이 거닐고 숨 쉬는 여백이자 기억의 공간이다. 그 고요한 풍경 위로 손자수로 수놓은 동물들이 모습을 드러낸다. 스라소니의 고요한 눈빛, 나란히 선 북극곰, 돌담 위의 고양이까지. 넓은 여백 속에 작게 놓인 형상은 오히려 오래 눈에 남고, 한 올 한 올 쌓인 실의 결은 그 작은 몸에 생생한 존재감을 더한다.

천과 실은 동물의 털을 떠올리게 하는 동시에, 오랫동안 인간의 몸을 감싸온 친숙하고 따뜻한 재료다. 작가는 실로 선을 쌓고 천과 천을 이어 붙이는 느리고 섬세한 시간을 거쳐 동물의 모습을 기록한다. 자연의 흐름과 켜켜이 쌓인 시간을 닮은 이 과정에는 쉽게 잊히는 생명에게 온기를 건네고 그 존재를 기억하려는 작가의 마음이 담겨 있다.

작품 속 동물들은 맑고 평온한 시선으로 우리를 바라본다. 그 시선은 생태계의 ‘마지막 한 마리’가 언젠가 인간이 될 수도 있다는 작가의 경고와 맞닿아 있다. 그러나 작품은 비극만을 말하지 않는다. 사라져간, 혹은 사라져가는 존재들이 살아낸 빛나는 순간을 가만히 붙들어 보여준다. 〈장생도〉는 그 마음이 닿는 또 하나의 풍경이다. 천을 이어 붙인 화면 위에서 해와 산, 물과 바위, 뭇 생명은 서로를 밀어내지 않고 어우러진다. 저마다의 삶을 함께 살아온 생명들의 오랜 시간이 그 안에 펼쳐진다.

이번 전시가 우리가 잊고 지낸 지구별의 벗들을 다시 바라보고, 함께 살아가는 이들의 안녕을 빌어보는 시간이 되기를 바란다.

■ Curatorial Statement

Wishing You Well

To Our Friends on Earth

In a human-centered world, many living beings lose their place and quietly disappear. From the life of the distant polar regions to the creatures who live alongside us, the artist gathers images of those being forgotten and wishes them well.

The work begins with a restrained ground. Snow-covered forests, seashores, and softly rendered landscapes in acrylic become spaces of stillness and memory—open expanses where life can walk and breathe. Hand-embroidered animals emerge from this quiet scenery: a lynx with a calm gaze, polar bears standing side by side, and cats resting on a stone wall. Though small within the broad, open spaces, these figures linger in the eye. Layered stitch by stitch, the threads lend their small bodies a vivid presence.

Cloth and thread evoke animal fur, while also offering the familiarity and warmth of materials that have long covered the human body. Through the slow, delicate work of building lines with thread and joining cloth to cloth, the artist records each animal. Like the rhythms of nature and the layers of time, this process carries the artist’s wish to offer warmth to lives easily forgotten and to keep their presence in memory.

The animals gaze at us with clear, tranquil eyes. Their gaze meets the artist’s warning: one day, humans themselves may be the last of a species. Yet the work speaks of more than tragedy. It quietly holds the radiant moments of those who have vanished or are vanishing. Jangsaengdo is another landscape shaped by this same wish. On a surface assembled from pieces of cloth, the sun and mountains, water and rocks, and many forms of life coexist without pushing one another aside. The long history of lives shared unfolds within it.

May this exhibition invite us to look again at the friends on Earth we have forgotten, and to wish well, together, all the lives with whom we share this world.
